Cleaning Your Windows

Cleaning your Windows – A Guide to Help

Pick a cloudy day

If it is sunny, your glass cleaner may dry before you are done wiping it off. This will leave hard to remove streaks.  Start on the shady side and work around the house as the sun moves

Remove the dirt off your windows

Before spraying your windows with glass cleaner, use a vacuum with a dusting attachment or a brush to remove as much of the dirt on your windows. This will prevent the dirt from turning to mud and smearing all over your window.

Alpine Glass CleanerRemove the screens

Remove the screens from your window and place them in a bath tub with hot, soapy water while you are cleaning your windows.

Choose the right cleaner

Spray a generous amount of foaming glass cleaner onto glass so that it can release the dirt that is stuck to the glass. Alpine Glass recommends either their self labelled glass cleaner, or a product made by SRP. If you do not want to use a commercial glass cleaner, you can make your own solution fairly easily (recipe below).

Use a microfibre cloth

These clothes are very absorbent and will help to not leave any streaks on the glass. They can be washed and used over and over.  If you prefer to use paper towel, make sure that you are using a high quality brand so that they do not shred and leave streaks.

Additional Tips

  • Wipe the inside panes vertically and the outside panes horizontally. This will ensure that if there are streaks that you will know if they are on the inside or outside.
  • Break down the cleaning into rooms so that you don’t need to clean all the windows at once. The job could be done over multiple days.
